Question: What ideas do you have to increase the career preparation and employment of people with disabilities in the arts?
Access to $ is germane and yet there are so many other ways, activities that can take place (and needs development in our everyday workplace) that does not require or should not depend on $ as the sole penultimate requirement to help any citizen from accessing survival needs; 'learning,' development, enhancement, or self-defined 'refining' from within one’s own vision, but not without consideration of cooperative engagement, and process, creating (not only technological platforms) but other forms (that do not dismiss the human capability of using their own sense of self) -- instincts -- while improving their skills or skill set one might already have and yet that which may have to be further developed or as with the case: applying knowledge (already possessed that may not fit a rigid system of false fallacies) or sharing them. We live in a society that is rooted historically in the Capitalistic system and with (are all a part of that system -no matter what are ideologies are about prosperity is and that almost means that essentially everything (is a commodity) and rules of acceptance about what is worth investing in for work is determined by these sets of rules) that leaves out a large group of humans (as well effects the landscape of the overall environment) such demands of creating an existence to live - to survive is strained by these forces and must be taken into consideration (that as an economist said on PBS, about a month ago, (not looking at my notes) 'some are going to be left without). So, how do we prepare those who don't know how to use a computer, or don't have the time, or capability, stamina, or how to read, as example, the English language, or write, or 'look good' 'enough' or have the power to participate in the preparedness state of living? (Yes, I appreciate creativity that fashion brings). Yet, this is in context to the deeper issues and implication we are faced in the context of 'careers' -- 'preparedness' of the new now and the 21st Century. Will it stick? (Optimist might say: it is possible but we have work to do for not only ourselves but natural acts of disruptions might create for them functions that they may or may not have power over to change? In this sense, the notion of 'career' is exciting and yet having had a few in my (this life as I know it right now) the 'work' force and the world is not the one I and many of us knew or came from. We are in a whole 'new' terrain that is rapidly advancing and (this rapidity determines (to a degree) what and who will or won't get what they need to (stay prepared even once they may have been prepared in the first place) The need: economics is critical because of (1) exchange for goods in a (consumeristic) or consumption-based society offer balance of the flow of goods and services. Cooperatives could help prepare and designing physically spaces could also but if you can't (get in the email) to ask then what and who will for you? Who are the Watchdogs for fair play and access? Behind the email curtain? Yes, money is good, but it is not all and yet it rules. However, values of respecting others differences no matter what and understanding can't be reiterated encourage. That being said $ pays to the bills due and cover costs (for even the basics) and is good for 'business'. Energy and harmony is important but so is Balance. At the end of the day, those who have $ ‘paying’ jobs have to return to that job and they also have and need the basics. While it is referenced as 'business' it helps to keep the flow of economics in check, but it is not the only way to be prosperous. If we think of power dynamics that gets played out in the way of how ranks and orders (with respect - I love Kings and Queens), but the class issue is a real big one (with the others), and it is again, I repeat myself here intentionally, it is not without the other factors already mentioned. If others folks are denied access (why can't we share power/); we see the money factor is again at play. However, if we find ways to share and create paths what is also being referenced here as new 'ecosystems' then this could help the concept of what a person needs in order to be a part of the larger society and offer their contributions like the next person. However, utopian this is, these issues cannot be understood without my own series of history (in my gleanings since early education) without looking at class, race, gender, identity, health and status before one is considered as part of the 'work' labor force. What are their needs must also be determined by that person and their community for 'family' or support (ers). (Creating 'jobs' 'work' 'art' is in need for many communities, and we can't leave out those who need to come in and those who are already here and as yet not been a part of anything; that is a part of the workforce, but we must widen the scope of inclusion (add folks to the 'jobs' that exists and 'reinvention is happening a lot by force and evolution - test it out as a pilot and see how they fare in the 'work' -- 'job' -- labor force and see how and/or what they chose. (or gets chosen for them) -- I noticed that the culture is beginning to encourage 'private' places and inclusion is now returning to ' by invitation only or you must be selected by 'our' committed. (Also due to online lack of (...) online privacy and security issues are of critical importance to who will join on the change. This is good and yet it is in great question - who determines the fate of the Many who will need access to be at that table online or on the phone or at the 'real' non cyber table? (I appreciate private events and private holdings (in context) but because of lack of privacy WE are ALL faced with today, there is a lot to consider about 'careers and being prepared'. But not at the exclusion of considering the multitudes of needs others have and because of a fast technology culture that is advancing and moving life even faster than one had imagined then how and what will one need to be prepared? If an app changes within a week and one does not have the means $ to pay for it how do they participate? If other bills are for the basics due then you are wait listed for the next app which might help to get one to their next job - so then what does that mean if you are wanting to help the planet or even yourself be a better person? If one can't get in (the door) and once you do get into the (door) (for the job) and get 'trained' or bring your own skills or luck, then who will accept it as fair to be a part of their community? Yet communities that are stigmatized can't prepare if they are without the means to improve their need for skill development (assuming they are in need of development or that they are without the skills to advance). Yes this is sort of a rhetorical riddle ish reflection to the questions. Dialogue is changing and so is the need for new language. The perception of what 'career' means must also be considered in how the person views the concept of being 'prepared' - thus, being prepared depends on many factors that are not only within the life circumstances of the person, but also is society prepared to (engage) those who have or are working from a different set of lens, and determinants of what constitutes to them of fairly 'being employed' -- Square? 1: Resources that assist them to become on their own merits (acknowledge or not) can it be sustained and view as valid member of the 'labor' work force where 'interdependent' and independent factors are a mix.' This is a very difficult question to answer as it is broad but a very important question. It also must take the context of what the person wants to do and what helps to keep them healthy is critical to the environment for each person. Health is just as important as being 'prepared'. That is also determined by the person or communities whom may or may not feel that they are prepared or not. This will help set a particular standard of self-determination so important for a person to empower themselves. Not all need others to 'empower' them we can empower each other and this is no dis respect. There are times when language of who has power and who doesn't is often determined by how one uses or abuses their power of giving and acknowledging what a person is in need of to be a part of society in the 'work' force.
Re: 'Disability' we must educate the world on the language being used about what it may or may not mean to be 'disabled' despite changes within the scientific realm.
Employment: Stop denying fears of difference; ageism, color issues, power dynamics of xenophobia, historical fears of a person’s color, creed, 'knowledge' and dismissals that are demeaning lack of awareness downplays (citizenship) inclusions. There is a blur and democracy offers many to have and yet there is a blur as to worth, value and access for development or inclusion. Every institution and company should undergo 'new' educational and training with respect to understanding historical relationships communities have had and have now to cope with change as for the people who they are and what they desire to become with and when at the table. Should they make it to the table. If they are brought on not after the fact ... but before (still) makes a difference and yet that depends on the context of the 'coming to meet' of 'inclusions'. Yet, this is in steeped in our culture and it is seen and witnessed as a dynamic that has withstood until recently for years. (This references the idea of the Slippery Slope motif) with (new culture meanings of what constitutes 'racism', not monolithic isims, etc. How we are (today in 2016 more concerned and less isolated but isolated...?or not who we were are thought we were - identity? in the 'work force' and the sweeping paradigm shift of who is an artist and who is not and yet who gets paid a high salary and who does not and why and why not?) To be re-evaluated in this history. This slippery slope is even more delicate (because of dynamics) of access (but the good is that we now have MORE access ironically so there has been change. To this end, it has not been without the contributions of others and yes critical thinking is important it helps honesty come forth as what is (from a historical lens) ingrained in our culture hinges on the idea that one has to have the up on the other; if you don't, you are not worth being a part of humanity. (I appreciate competition but in context. In this new Century and the impending future there is too much at stake for our humanity. That includes wildlife. Endangered species and decreased numbers of 'ethnic groups' languages, cultures now scattered and re-scattered impact (survival needs as receptors to 'learning and coping with (human worth) being a part of the human landscape). We need education and by culturally sensitive and yes politically correct but honest does not mean you can't be correct---further trained engaged educators...are needed...Which includes the actual people themselves as participants in their own 'learning'. We learn and can learn from each other. This will help the preparation for 'career' or 'labor' that pays off - respects the idea that people put energy into 'work' labor or done/made. hmi
