Create Grants Mentor Program; Hold Workshop for Disabled Artists

Consider creating a Grants Mentor Program to help interested disabled artists determine specific artistic goals, resource needs, planned or proposed projects (taking into consideration any needs or limitations due to the disability). Mentors can help identify programs and resources that might help meet those needs based on factors such as discipline and geography. Resources could include grant programs, but also may expand ...more »

Creative Leveraging

Imagine Art is a community where artists with and without disabilities gather for art making. Our space recruits a wide spectrum of people (with and without disabilities). We have artists with developmental disabilities that have access to Medicaid Waiver dollars for community based support. We have artists with mental illness that are seeking to serve others and access part time gigs in the arts. We have non-disabled ...more »

For Artwork that is difficult to market ...

There is a kind of artwork, often the best, that is very difficult to market, due to the subject matter. The particular "kind" of artwork I am thinking of is the art created from those in stress -- the mentally disturbed, the mentally disabled, the family member who has lost someone due to a mass shooting, first responders, soldiers with PTSD, an abused wife or child....the artwork comes from people who do not normally ...more »

Full Inclusion Art Ed

As an art educator I see a big opportunity for individuals with disabilities to simply be included pre k-college in the arts curriculum that is available to all the students in a given building. Teachers willfully work with artist that are in their minds "gifted" artists but often won't take that extra time with students with disabilities. When we take this time it can open up conversations about opportunities in the ...more »

Make it Yourself!

When Mark Medoff wrote "Children of a Lesser God," he insisted that ANY production of this play must include deaf actors in deaf roles. If you create good professional material (dance, plays, films) you can have some control over its production. What is lacking in the story-rich, talented disabled community is confidence and opportunity. Teachers of play-writing such as myself can form or demand creating writing classes ...more »

Reality check..........

All artists, disabled or not, have trouble finding/creating outlets for their works. Though, there is another issue for disabled... Those that rely on government benefits, do not file income tax. As soon as we do, the government benefits are stopped. The Federal government does not want to seem to understand that this income is not stable or a just one time success. Another issue is mobility. I think many would ...more »

Grants for People with Disabilities

There are some fantastic grants out there now for parents who want to further their art. I think that it would be really helpful to have something similar for pwd - grants to help carve time to write, or to pay for art supplies/cameras/etc. It's an enormous struggle to get set in a profitable cycle - because to be able to afford the time to complete the work, and to afford the necessary supplies, you have to work. And ...more »

Reflection#2 Career Preparedness

Question: What ideas do you have to increase the career preparation and employment of people with disabilities in the arts? Access to $ is germane and yet there are so many other ways, activities that can take place (and needs development in our everyday workplace) that does not require or should not depend on $ as the sole penultimate requirement to help any citizen from accessing survival needs; 'learning,' development, ...more »

Pricing Art

I find when selling Art the problem I ran across is pricing the artwork. At most since my area is art poor in the state of Texas or at least far west. So it comes down to explaining the person the artwork is worth this by showing the cost of the framing and the media used to create it. Most people are insulted saying that they can get for less somewhere else. The second part is exposure. Online sites like Ebay, ...more »

Reflection #1

Just coming onto this site and not attached to getting points-- I'd like to articulate that there have always been challenges for all communities and the notion idea and 'fact' of the word 'disability' has never been truly understood or well-represented in the context of (cultural beliefs about health) and the perception (and the trajectory of being in the state of 'wellness' is not a fixed condition of 'health' for all ...more »

Support for Managers / Agents / Marketing Professionals?

Hi, my topic is a bit different, but I hope it's welcome here. I have cerebral palsy and use a power wheelchair. I am not an artist myself, but I'm interested in working on the business side of the arts field. I particularly enjoy working with musicians and actors, and would love to be a manager or publicist. I have found this to be more challenging than I expected! I've developed some skills and experience working with ...more »
