Education & Job Training: Resources, Opportunities, Strategies

People with disabilities may find challenges and barriers to employment in the arts as artists and arts administrators, and/or in promoting their own artistic practice. What career preparation strategies would you recommend for people with disabilities seeking employment or self-employment in the arts, as artists or other cultural workers? We are looking for your ideas on the available resources and strategies for artists to promote their work, existing professional development opportunities, resources and strategies for acquiring and retaining public benefits and healthcare, and resources for accommodations in work and school.

In addition, please share your ideas and comments for the following: resources that assist people with disabilities in overcoming barriers and challenges and provide career preparation and opportunities in the arts field, effective tools or resources for networking and job searching, and resources for educators to supplement their existing curricula in arts education programs to include disability arts representation and narratives.

What About the Colleges?

I continue to ask what is being done for dance training to be equitable for wheelchair dancers on the college or university level? I don't just mean an integrated class here and their. I am talking about the ability for wheelchair dancers to take all classes together with their non disabled peers and to receive a degree in dance. We know that it can be done because we do it at Dancing Wheels Company, but to date there ...more »

GrantsNetworkingPostEducation

I would like to see more support for artists to continue once they've graduated. It would be extremely helpful to have a "one stop shop" for displaying work, applying for competitions/grants and networking to enable those individuals who graduated from art college to develop into a successful artist post graduation. On a personal note, after graduate school, it was extremely difficult to continue working in the arts and ...more »

training for Voice Actors

There are many jobs in announcing in the media, in business communications and in the entertainment fields. The normal route is to go to drama school and received full training as a stage actor. That is not necessary for performing as an off-screen announcer, for animated voices in videogames, radio, television, documentaries and business presentations. This kind of employment is ideal for people with disabilities, who ...more »

Career transition strategies for late-in-life artists

Unlike other underrepresented groups, not every artist enters the population of people with disabilities at a young age. So artists who become disabled later in life often must reboot their careers and find new ways to work, in effect re-emerging. Any anecdotal experience, resource materials, and/or assistive tools you can share on effective ways to transition and adapt to a new reality as a person in the arts with a ...more »

Job centers specializing in disability assistance/placement

Can anyone share their experience in finding and using a job center and/or agency specializing in helping people with disabilities create portfolio of work samples — audio, visual performance tape, art portfolio, etc. — free of charge or for a nominal fee?

Create "Community Arts" as group within Neighborhood Councils

I was just thinking to myself, although my NC of Sylmar is relatively young and always in need of more participation and support, I never heard of (or saw) a leadership sector for "the arts". I will have to inquire if such a designate group can be developed. In turn, perhaps other Neighborhood Councils do not have such leadership role either? On a sidenote, usually, I always see "Seniors and the Disabled" grouped ...more »

Job-seeking tools

Starting out on a job search is a challenging undertaking for even seasoned professionals. It can seem even more daunting and overwhelming for a young person just starting out, particularly one who not only has to deal with age inexperience, but with a disability as well. While every job seeker in the arts — regardless of whether or not they have some type of disability — needs professional-quality presentation tools ...more »

Sometimes arts educators and job trainers do not have sufficient knowledge of or experience with helping students with disabilities in creating portfolios that incorporate special accommodations by that student to present that work in the most professional manner possible. Would anyone share any guidelines and/or examples of tips for educators on creating portfolios in the various areas of the arts that are specifically ...more »

Job App

Develop an application for job seekers to input what they are able to do, tasks which require accommodation to perform and what their limitations are. The application would then synthesize this data and produce a possible match for employment/jobs, which could then be matched against job posts that are a good fit for the prospective employee.
