Besides being a disabled artist, disability issues are extremely important to me. Near the age of 15, I was hired through a Summer youth employment program to work with developmentally disabled adults. My grandmother was blind, and a cousin, due to being shot nine times, underwent 56 operations and is now a double amputee. Since so many public schools have removed art from the classroom, I would like to see a grant written that would support it's return or to use public schools to offer after school art programs. In my area which includes Oregon and SW Washington, I see children who have no time allowed for drawing to express themselves. I will draw, even for 5 minutes, with my challenged students, and it increases their ability to focus. ...more »
Grants, more often than not, require that the "greatest number of people" be impacted. For Deaf theatre companies, this means including some sort of accessible component, meaning auditory or readable text for hearing audiences. This has the effect of discouraging deeper explorations into Deaf arts in the name of serving hearing audiences expectations and needs. At the college level, I'd like to see smaller class sizes. Colleges are impacted and sometimes the course is too fast or too many people talking. Many young adults with disabilities have difficulty being assertive. I need to find more classes addressing work-related social skills. You know, engaging in "water cooler talk" instead of just talking about what interests them.

I'm a student with a disability currently attending an arts college. While art has great potential as a career for those with disabilities, the present educational and gallery system makes it very hard for outliers like the disabled to succeed. Art is good for students to overcome a stress filled academic schedule but very few can call it a career goal. I can appreciate urban art, but really, I don't see often see art as a rural pursuit. Unless someone has taken the time to build a classic car and accomplished the magic it takes of folks to notice. But then again like urban art very few will master the ability to call this a career.
