Education & Job Training: Resources, Opportunities, Strategies
People with disabilities may find challenges and barriers to employment in the arts as artists and arts administrators, and/or in promoting their own artistic practice. What career preparation strategies would you recommend for people with disabilities seeking employment or self-employment in the arts, as artists or other cultural workers? We are looking for your ideas on the available resources and strategies for artists to promote their work, existing professional development opportunities, resources and strategies for acquiring and retaining public benefits and healthcare, and resources for accommodations in work and school.
In addition, please share your ideas and comments for the following: resources that assist people with disabilities in overcoming barriers and challenges and provide career preparation and opportunities in the arts field, effective tools or resources for networking and job searching, and resources for educators to supplement their existing curricula in arts education programs to include disability arts representation and narratives.
I was just thinking to myself, although my NC of Sylmar is relatively young and always in need of more participation and support, I never heard of (or saw) a leadership sector for "the arts". I will have to inquire if such a designate group can be developed. In turn, perhaps other Neighborhood Councils do not have such leadership role either? Unlike other underrepresented groups, not every artist enters the population of people with disabilities at a young age. Can anyone share their experience in finding and using a job center and/or agency specializing in helping people with disabilities create portfolio of work samples — audio, visual performance tape, art portfolio, etc. — free of charge or for a nominal fee?
Sometimes arts educators and job trainers do not have sufficient knowledge of or experience with helping students with disabilities in creating portfolios that incorporate special accommodations by that student to present that work in the most professional manner possible. People with disabilities are underrepresented in the entertainment industry, especially pertaining to the performing arts. I think there is not enough opportunities for people with disabilities to take the stage. I think we really should have an open discussion and carefully make a casting decision with inclusion.
Observation, as it relates to students with disabilities and their "participation" in school arts programs. Their participation is low or non-existent because school arts programs are student selected and band/chorus/dance/theatre/etc teachers do not recruit for student participants. There are many jobs in announcing in the media, in business communications and in the entertainment fields. The normal route is to go to drama school and received full training as a stage actor. That is not necessary for performing as an off-screen announcer, for animated voices in videogames, radio, television, documentaries and business presentations.
