Work related social skills

At the college level, I'd like to see smaller class sizes. Colleges are impacted and sometimes the course is too fast or too many people talking. Many young adults with disabilities have difficulty being assertive. I need to find more classes addressing work-related social skills. You know, engaging in "water cooler talk" instead of just talking about what interests them.

Public School Classroom Aide

Since so many public schools have removed art from the classroom, I would like to see a grant written that would support it's return or to use public schools to offer after school art programs. In my area which includes Oregon and SW Washington, I see children who have no time allowed for drawing to express themselves. I will draw, even for 5 minutes, with my challenged students, and it increases their ability to focus. ...more »

Disabled Artist Advocacy Leadership Institute

Besides being a disabled artist, disability issues are extremely important to me. Near the age of 15, I was hired through a Summer youth employment program to work with developmentally disabled adults. My grandmother was blind, and a cousin, due to being shot nine times, underwent 56 operations and is now a double amputee. Feature Machines for those who are tied to them

I know some with disabilities, who rely on their wheelchairs and the way they are tied to them, who are frustrated by the machines that enable them. Turn these into an asset. Feature the machine as an actual part of the art, performance art and/or dance. Penalty/repercussions

I believe that production companies, feature films, television projects etc. should be penalized either by a tax fine,or some sort of fine should they choose to hire a Able-Bodied actor for a role requiring a person with a Disability. I think if you penalize producing organizations where it really counts in their pocketbook and wallet they will start to care and do the right thing. I am an artist with an invisible disability. A lot of my research that informs my artwork examines representation of Disability in mainstream media. I would like to further my research and go deeper into Disability Studies (Masters or PHD) but most programs are geared toward Social Work or Education. 1. Challenges and opportunities for Careers in the Arts

Art is a great idea to teach to children to help them

Art is good for students to overcome a stress filled academic schedule but very few can call it a career goal. I can appreciate urban art, but really, I don't see often see art as a rural pursuit. Unless someone has taken the time to build a classic car and accomplished the magic it takes of folks to notice. But then again like urban art very few will master the ability to call this a career.

While art has great potential as a career for those with disabilities, the present educational and gallery system makes it very hard for outliers like the disabled to succeed.
